Saterdagoggend het ons optyd 6vm by Frankfurt geland en sommer vroeg ons kit ontvang op die carousel. Ons fiets sou eers 10vm gereed wees en het onsself probeer vermaak op die lughawe om tyd te verwyl. Wel, 'n lughawe kan net so interessant wees en teen 7vn is ons uitgekuier en gaan soek 'n taxi om ons 'rustig' na die fietsplek te neem, sowat 18km verder.

Die 'rustig' is toe nie so nie want ons beland op die autobahn en hy besef hierdie rit gaan vir hom tydmors wees. Met 'n E-klas Merc maak hy gatskoon in die linkerbaan (die vinnige een) teen +210km tot by die afrit. Ewenwel, hy laai ons toe af by die fietsplekingang om 7h30 - twee-en-'n-halfuur te vroeg en teen 35 Euro later. Gelukkig is daar 'n McDonalds om die hoek en ons drink laaaank koffie om die tyd om te kry.

By die fietsplek ontmoet ons vir Joe, 'n Amerikaner wat by Lufthansa in Frankfurt werk en net motorfiets ry. Hy vertel ons dat dit die volgende dag gaan reen en hoop ons het reenpakke. Ons gesels tot die deure om 10vm oopmaak en toe ons vertrek ry hy sowat 60km saam ons en breek toe weg op sy eie rigting. Nice kerel, die Joe.

Die rit vanaf Frankfurt na Lausanne is vervelig soos enige snelweg maar is, behalwe dat ons op 'n autobahn is en waar moontlik ry ons gemaklik teen sowat 160km/h. By die grens met Switzerland moet ons 'n tol-'tag' koop teen 40 Frank en brandstof ingooi teen 1.73 Frank. Hierdie land is flippen duur.

Nadat ons by die lodge ingeboek het gaan stap ons en drink 'n Heineken by 'n straatkafee. Natuurlik die kamera in die kamer vergeet. Hier word 250ml Henekens verkoop @ F8.9 vir 2. Ons het elk 2 gedrink, ons gebruiklike broodjie, kaas, ham en tamatie gekoop vir bereiding in die kamer en ook 'n 2003 Spaanse Cabernet om saam die aandete te geniet. Die Cabernet duurder as al die kos saam, maar wat ons prioriteite is reg!

Sondagoggend toe ons wakker word toe sous dit... Dem Amerikaner. hy was reg!!

Na ontbyt moet ons pad vat want die tyd wag nie vir ons nie. By die fiets in die parkeergarage trek ons reenpakke aan. Die reen gaan mos nie lank hou nie.

Eers ry ons die scenic roete al langs die meer. Eintlik is dit eerder 'n see so groot. Maar die reen wil nie wyk nie en die System-6 se blerrie visor hou aan opwasem. Die ding het mos so'n los inner en die wasem is tussen die twee. Daar waar vingers nie kan inkom nie. Nouja, die linkerkant wasem meer op as die regterkant en kyk ek toe meer met die regteroog as met die linkeroog - julle verstaan mos?

Toe ons toe die bergpad begin trek ons af om die tenk vol te maak - weer @ F1.73, eina. En toe waai die los inner van die visor en kan ek weer met albei oe sien. Aan die linkerkant is wingerde en regs die meer, beeldskoon mooi. Net jammer vir die reen

(Ek het my bes probeer om die treinspoordrade uit die kiekie te haal maar hulle wou nie skuif nie).

Ongelukkig, weens die reen kon ons nie baie foto's neem nie. Een ou klein druppeltjie en die hele lens is papnat. Trudie het in die ry geneem en ons sal dit later aflaai.

Ons moes net stop vir 'n moerkoffie voor die pad ernstig raak en om vir 'n kort wyle uit die reen te ontsnap.

En toe begin die moeder van alle passe. Julle wat in SA passe geniet moet hier kom ry! Die A2 snelweg is brug op tonnel op brug op tonnel seker gemaklik om te ry maar ons verkies toe die ou pad deur die Alpe tot by Luganu Nord waar ons vanaand oornag.

Hierdie pas is meer as 150km lank en elke haarnaalddraai verlang eerste rat! Ongelukkig het die wolke laag gehang en kon ons nie veel van die natuurskoon geniet nie. Daar is plekke om te stop vir uitsig maar niks te sien nie, net wit, wit en wit. En dan die reen wat nie wyk nie. Hierdie was die mees uitdagende rit wat ek ooit op 'n fiets gehad het. Enige visor wasem mos op as jy stadig ry. En hou hom een knippie oop dan kom die reen van bo in en jou bril word ook nat. En die wolke wat o;p jou neerstort en die draaie en die heeltyd se klim... tot by 2441m toe ons die sneeu langs die pad kry.

Dit is toe ook al vrek koud - 8grade C. Nie so koud in teorie nie maar ons het hier ook besef reenpakke wat al 4 jaar oud is is nie meer effektief nie. Ons ryklere onder is deurnat en net die inner baadjie wat ons bolywe droog hou. Alles help dat ons bibber.

Toe begin ons daal en het nie meer enjinkrag nodig vir die voortgaan nie maar enjinkompressie! Teen derde en soms vierde rat.

Ja, ons het heelhuids anderkant uitgekom en kan die storie vertel. Sal net graag weer daardie pas wil ry in mooiweer...

... as die Amerikaner Joe net nie weer gaan se dit gaan die volgende dag reen nie.

We found a winding road into a valley and out the other end. The road is narrow but at most places wide enough for two vehicles passing. Comparable with Bloukrans Pass, only much longer.

Match the scale to the number of bends per km and judge for yourself - a stunning road

This road connects villages in outlying areas around Lugano. At places the space between buildings is so narrow only one vehicle can pass through. Perfectly maintained this road is the only access to these areas and with the bike the fastest one can reach at any spot is about 30km/h.

With my limited knowledge of the world I'd say Switzerlaqnd is the place to ride if one wants to see the beauty and placid of Europe. Get your backside out of cities as quick as possible and see the country side, where real people live.
Then we reached the other side and after with fuel for the strectch to Milan. Boring... on a toll highway, but fortunately we coudls maintain a healthy 140 most of times. We reached Pisa (our place of stay for two nights) and the GPS found it quite difficult to locate our lodge. I had to take over as some of the little stegies are not on the map. Eventually I could park around a corner. The waypoint shows within 30m but there is nothing logical to see. Trudie went to search on foot. She found the entrance somewhere in the picture.

Stupid city this - the only place of interest is this leaning tower built by a bunch of monks who knew nothing about soil science and sampling. On our way to Pisa we passed the coastal town of Carrara where I once spent a week learning everything on granite cutting & polishing. I thought to give Trudie a taste of the Mediterranian as I do not know when ever the opportunity will arise in future.
